Maternal Object Relations and Child-Rearing Behaviors: Mediating Effects of Self-Efficacy
Song Hye-Ran

Abstract
Objectives: This study was conducted to identify whether a mother¡¯s self-efficacy mediates between object relations and child-rearing behaviors.

Methods: A total of 260 mothers with children in kindergarten completed an object relations questionnaire, a scale measuring child-rearing behaviors, and a scale measuring self-efficacy.

Results: A mother¡¯s self efficacy completely mediated between unstable attachment and affectionate child-rearing behaviors, between social incompetence and affectionate child-rearing behaviors, between social incompetence and rejecting child-rearing behaviors, and between alienation and rejecting child-rearing behaviors. The results show that a) unstable attachment decreases affectionate child-rearing behaviors, b) alienation increases rejecting child-rearing behaviors, and c) social incompetence simultaneously decreases affectionate child-rearing behaviors and increases rejecting child-rearing behaviors.

Conclusions: Intervention programs that improve self-efficacy may be effective in increasing affectionate child-rearing behaviors and decreasing rejecting child-rearing behaviors.
